OpenOP Introduces its new Data Lab MDG

The convergence of telecommunications, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and data ecosystems is reshaping the digital landscape at an unprecedented pace. In this rapidly evolving environment, OpenOP continues to strengthen its position as a foundational platform for next-generation Telco-Cloud innovation.

We are pleased to announce the creation of a new Module Development Group (MDG) within OpenOP: Data Lab.

OOP Introduces Data Lab

The Data Lab MDG represents a major step forward in expanding OpenOP’s capabilities toward data-driven and AI-native services and will be led by Vasiliki Parousidou from Intracom Telecom. Data Lab is designed to introduce advanced DataOps capabilities into OpenOP, enabling:

  • Exposure of data analytics services
  • Integration and execution of AI pipelines
  • Dataspace-based sharing of data and AI models across federated environments
  • Trusted, policy-driven exchange of data assets via dataspace connectors

This new module establishes a structured and interoperable layer for managing and exposing data and AI capabilities, significantly enhancing OpenOP’s overall architecture.

A Strategic Leap: Strong Synergy with 6G-DALI

A defining aspect of the Data Lab initiative is its deep and strategic alignment with 6G-DALI, the flagship EU-funded SNS-JU project on 6G AI and Data. 6G-DALI is not merely aligned with this effort—it is actively contributing to it:

  • The project is committed to contributing its already mature codebase for 6G DataOps, enabling the creation of AI-ready datasets
  • It brings forward the foundations of the first EU 6G Dataspace, enabling trusted and governed data sharing across stakeholders
  • These capabilities will be integrated directly into the OpenOP Data Lab module, accelerating its maturity and real-world applicability.

Equally important is the institutional and leadership synergy between the two initiatives, with Intracom Telecom serving as Technical Manager of 6G-DALI and Chair of OpenOP and ISI/Athena Research Center as Project Coordinator of 6G-DALI and Vice-Chair of OpenOP, as well as multiple strong partners from the 6G-DALI consortium (Eurecom, Iquadrat, OTE, NextWorks, SparkWorks) actively contributing to OpenOP. This overlap is not incidental—it creates an innate, structural alignment between OpenOP and 6G-DALI, ensuring:

  • Direct transfer of innovation and technical assets
  • Consistency in architectural vision and priorities
  • Accelerated standardization and industrial adoption pathways

As a result, Data Lab is uniquely positioned to benefit from cutting-edge, high-maturity technology from day one.

Enhancing OpenOP’s Core Value Proposition

The introduction of Data Lab significantly expands OpenOP’s role in the ecosystem.

Until now, OpenOP has focused on:

  • Service exposure
  • Orchestration
  • Federation across domains and testbeds
  • AI integration

With Data Lab, OpenOP evolves into a platform that also enables:

  • Trusted data sharing across federated environments
  • Reusable AI and analytics services
  • Governed access to datasets and models
  • Interoperable data pipelines across domains

This positions OpenOP as a holistic platform, capable of exposing not only network and cloud resources, but also data and intelligence as first-class assets.

Driving the Telco-Cloud-AI-Data Convergence

The Data Lab MDG is a critical enabler of the broader convergence shaping the industry:

  • Telecom infrastructure becomes programmable and exposed
  • Cloud environments provide scalable execution and orchestration
  • AI pipelines deliver intelligence and automation
  • Data ecosystems enable collaboration and value creation

By integrating these dimensions, OpenOP is helping define a new paradigm where services are data-driven, AI-enabled, and inherently interoperable across federated domains.

Looking Ahead

With Intracom Telecom leading the effort and strong backing from the 6G-DALI ecosystem, the Data Lab MDG is set to rapidly advance:

  • Its technical architecture and module scope
  • Integration of DataOps and dataspace capabilities
  • Collaboration and contribution frameworks across the community

This momentum underscores OpenOP’s continuous evolution into a platform of strategic importance for Europe’s digital future.

Conclusion

The launch of Data Lab is a decisive step in OpenOP’s journey toward becoming a cornerstone of the Telco-Cloud ecosystem. By embedding DataOps, enabling dataspace-driven collaboration, and leveraging the tangible contributions and leadership synergy of 6G-DALI, OpenOP is accelerating toward a future where data, AI, cloud, and telecom capabilities converge seamlessly. This is not just growth—it is strategic consolidation of innovation, positioning OpenOP as a key platform for the next generation of digital services and ecosystems.
